Drew Brees’s Son Calls Winning Superbowl Play
VANDER BITES – One of the gutsiest play calls ever made during the NFL’s biggest game was actually the brainchild of a toddler.
Drew Brees, this year’s Superbowl MVP, says he owes the come-from-behind victory to the football genius mind of his baby son, Baylen Brees, who “saw something in the booth” that lead to the surprise onside kick to start the third quarter.
“He just has a brain for special teams,” New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton said. “He knows when something’s going to work, and we’ve all learned not to second guess him. Because even when he calls the most outlandish things, they always turn out, like the time he set me up with my wife on a blind date.”
The youngest Brees’s call came at a very unconventional time. Trailing by one possession to start the second half, the Saints lined up in a traditional kick off formation, then squibbed a 10-yarder to the left side of the field. A huge dog pile ensued, followed by several expensive commercials.
After recovering the kick, the Saints went on to win.
“That was the turning point,” the eldest Brees, who was nowhere near the dog pile, said.
Baylen, who celebrated with the team during the ceremonial post game celebration, said he was just doing his job.
“They brought me in to make these kinds of calls,” he said through an interpreter familiar with toddler talk. “This is the big stage, if you don’t have the stomach for it, you shouldn’t be here.”
Still wearing his headset, Baylen found his father, Drew, on the sideline after the game. They enjoyed the confetti, bright lights and when asked by reporters what they are going to do now that they’ve won the Superbowl, they responded: “We’re going to Chuck E. Cheese.”
The off season should prove interesting for Baylen, who has already been approached by several other NFL teams looking for special teams coordinators. And several sources report that the troubled USC football program has offered him the head coaching position. Even Fox Sports, which is looking to add a 90th personality to its long-winded commentator lineup, expressed interest.
Still, Baylen says he’s happy where he’s at.
“I love New Orleans,” he said. “My family just settled in here, I’d hate to uproot them now, especially now that my dad has so many good friends.”
